Topic:  The contribution of a resilient model for adolescents with the most complex difficulties: Findings from a study of adolescent in-patients – Dr Derek Blincow, Dr Jenny Brown and colleagues from the Clinical Team at the High Dependency Unit at Ticehurst House Hospital

Resources: You can download the slides.

Session summary: The In-Patient High Dependency Unit at Ticehurst Hospital works with young adolescents who have been through other psychiatric services but still remain with substantial problems. They usually attract a number of diagnoses and their difficulties have proved largely resistant to conventional treatment methods. We have looked at a sequence of twenty-five admissions to see what has been helpful and comparing this to the resilient therapy framework. There are substantial gains to be made in these complex scenarios from applying a resilient model and the session will present cases that the continuing audit of cases reveals benefit most from this approach, explore the reasons why and begin to identify the specific resilient mechanisms involved.

Biography: Dr Derek Blincow is a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist.  He studied Social Philosophy before taking up Medicine and Psychiatry. He acts as an External Professional Advisor to the UK Health Ombudsman and an Expert Witness to the Family Courts. Dr Jenny Brown is a Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist, and the Medical Director of Ticehurst House Hospital.

Most interested: Derek and colleagues reckon their talk will be of most interest to researchers and practitioners. But parents, students, young people, public & voluntary sector peeps are of course invited too. In fact any supportive heckling of speakers to talk in plain English and be aware of different perspectives is, as ever at the forums, always welcome.

This session took place on Tuesday 24 April 2012.

The Resilience Forum is for ANYBODY (with a pulse!) involved with or interested in resilience research!
