Topic:  Supporting young people’s mental health in schools: a resilience based approach – Lisa Buttery, Anne Rathbone & Claire Stubbs from Boingboing and Judy Perraton and Vicki Spencer-Hughes from East Sussex County Council

Resources:  You can download the forum slides.

Session Summary:  This interactive presentation is designed to complement the roll out of the guide ‘Supporting children and young people in their mental health: A guide for schools‘. It will outline how the need for the guide was identified and the process of co-producing it with a cross-disciplinary team, including young people with experience of unmet mental health needs as pupils.

It will provide an overview of how to use the guide in practical situations, with real life examples and case studies on how the Resilience Framework which underpins the guide can be used to address specific issues for pupils and schools in which mental health needs are an underlying factor.

There will be opportunities to ask specific questions about mental health needs covered in the guide and how these can be addressed using the Resilience Framework as an embedded therapy approach.

Biography:  Lisa Buttery is Artist in Residence and Participation and Training Worker for Boingboing, and a representative of people with lived experience for the Centre of Resilience for Social Justice (external link). Lisa liaised with the young people from Download and East Sussex Youth Cabinet to make sure that their ‘Top Ten Tips’ for promoting positive mental health in schools was integrated into the more detailed Schools Guide.

Her remit is to help schools and colleges develop a whole school approach to mental health and emotional wellbeing.

Anne Rathbone is the Senior Training and Consultancy Manager for Boingboing and the co-production lead. Anne led on the co-ordination and editing of this co-produced Schools Guide, ensuring that it was accessible and practical for school staff to use, and in line with the latest research evidence base on resilience.

Vicki Spencer-Hughes works for ESCC as a Consultant in Public Health with a lead for children and young people. As chair of the Schools and Colleges Mental Health and Emotional Wellbeing Working Group she was involved in developing the ‘Supporting children and young people in their mental health – a guide for East Sussex Schools’.
