Topic: Building community resilience in the post-earthquake context of Nepal – Shubhendra Man Shrestha, PhD student, Goldsmiths, University of London
Resources: The slides from this forum will be available soon.
Session Summary: ‘Building Community Resilience’ has become a buzz phrase in Nepal, especially in the post-earthquake context. Government, national and international non-government organisations and private sector organisations have been working over the last 3 years to build community resilience in the most earthquake affected areas.
This talk is based on Shubhendra’s experience of conducting what he calls ‘YOUR WORLD research’, particularly for his PhD on youth resilience. Shubhendra will present an overview of strategies adopted by the government and non-government organisations to make communities more resilient in Nepal. He will also look at the changes it brought to the lives of young people living in marginalised communities.
Resilience is a contextual and dynamic process and an ever-changing and moving phenomenon. Understanding youth navigation of tensions in their own social and political context is essential to build their resilience, since individuals are continually shaped by interactions with aspects of their environment, social and physical life.
Biography: Shubhendra Man Shresthais a PhD student in the department of anthropology at Goldsmiths, University of London. He completed his Masters’ degree in Nepal and worked with national and international organisations including ActionAid for the last 10 years.
